Learning the ropes.

Rope Trellis that is.

I had a small issue in my extremely small and basic garden.
How to I support my pea and clematis plants.
How can I make something fun and colorful.

So I started searching the internet saw so many fun ways to build a trellis.
Horizontal
Vertical
Circular
Conical

I figured I would try a fun design on the fence.
This way I could hopefully support the plants AND get some fence coverage.

So, to start I had to finished the second half of the 12 foot flower bed.
It had been raining the day before so the ground was damp.
It made digging up the remaining grass a snap.
Thanks to Jaime for the manpower.
Then we had to adding gardening soil and top off with mulch.
Michael doesn't use the wagon much anymore, so I snagged it for my project.
So much easier on the back.

All set for a trellis and plants.

Supplies:
Rope or Wire - I used colored clothes line from the $1 Store.
6 screws - preferably galvanized.
Screwdriver or Drill

Map out your design.
I select a crisscross design that needed 3 screws on each side of the fence.
Each of the screws were in a straight vertical line.
Just pick your placement and go.

Now the fun part, attaching your rope.
Start at one of the bottom screws.
My clothes line was very easy to work with and tied around the screws easily
I just triple knotted at each screw.

Move your rope diagonally to the second, or middle screw, on the opposite side of the fence.
Loop around several times and then attach to the top screw on the opposite side.

Once at the top, string the rope straight across to the other top screw.
Then work your way diagonally down to the second and then last screw.

Tie off the rope at the last bottom screw.
Don't forget to trim your ends.
It's a bit hard to see in this pic, but the blue stands out nicely from the fence.
It should look nice with lots of green plants on it as well.
Crossing my fingers.

Now for the plants.
Here are my pea plants laced on the rope.

Another shot.
I'll let you know if the peas and clematis actually grown on the rope trellis
and if this is a hit or a bust.
I like that it is an interesting design and added a pop of color.

Lastly, I started filling in the rest of the bed with the veggie plants we are growing from seed.
Below is a shot of my spinach.
It seems happy.
I'll share some progress pics of the entire bed soon.

XOXO,

  4. This is such a great idea!! So much better than nailing those heavy metal frames onto the fence. I'll definitely put this to use :)
